With so many restaurants and so many options available it is difficult to appease children with the options available. Many restaurants give the option of burger and chips or chicken nuggets, but what if you want your children to try something a little more authentic. Here is a compilation of some the best Cypriot food that kids will love.
This is a sesame seed based dip that has a nutty taste. It can appear and taste a little like peanut butter. It is normally served with warm, fresh bread which is then dipped. If your kid likes peanut butter then the likelihood is they will like this too. If they have a sweet tooth then see if a jam or some crushed berries is available.
Here we have a yoghurt based starter. It is made with natural yoghurt with the addition of lemon juice and cucumbers. The taste is slightly salty but generally light and refreshing. They will like the experience of the warm bread with the cold dip. It can also be used sparingly so the taste is not overwhelming.
The chicken souvlaki is similar to the Souvla but uses smaller pieces of chicken that are grilled closer to the flame. The chicken breast is only lightly seasoned with salt, pepper, oil and lemon juice. The taste is light and will be loved by kids.
If you want them to experience the wonders of the Meditteranean then fish is the way to go. Often children find certain seafood items overwhelming, especially because of its appearance and strong taste. Sea bass or sea bream are very light, fluffy fish, with gentle meat. If you ask the chef to ensure that it is served as a fillet and with the skin removed, your kids won’t have to worry about looking it in the eye before eating it.
Pasticcio is a classic Greek Cypriot dish. It is comprised of a meat sauce with pasta and a light béchamel sauce. Its closest relative is the lasagne, however the pasticcio comes with a macaroni shaped pasta, not sheets. It is an easy eating comfort food that we are sure they would enjoy.
Calamari is a food that not only tastes delicious but is fun to look at. The calamari pieces are battered and come in a circular, ring shape. The meat is very light to taste and generally comes with chips which most kids will love.
If, like us, you want your children to soak up a little of the Cypriot vibe then these foods will be good for them. They are all not too overpowering and appear like dishes they will be similar with from home. At Firehouse we are happy to adopt the menu to suit your children and we have a generous playground, if they are happier bouncing around to their heart’s content.
